Debts and Inspirations
The Siltmark Method and Commonplace Garden Method do not replace existing tools; they stand on the shoulders of several minimalist traditions:
- One Big Text File (OBTF): The practice of keeping all notes in a single plain-text file. Siltmark borrows the append-only discipline and single-file structure.
- jrnl.sh: A CLI journaling tool. Siltmark shares its philosophy but remains tool-agnostic, working in any text editor.
- The Bullet Journal (Ryder Carroll): Borrowed the idea of a single notebook and chronological logs, while stripping away the migration rituals and task management.
- Org-mode: Inspired the H2/H3/H4 hierarchy for a navigable, structured text file that remains readable as raw text.
The goal was to synthesize these into a system that requires zero maintenance while protecting the spontaneity of the writer.
