Siltmark on Paper

The principles of the Siltmark Method are agnostic to the medium. The analog version works identically to the digital one: one medium, write at the end, prose as the default mode, and zero maintenance.

The Medium

Use a single notebook with bound pages. Not loose sheets or themed notebooks. One volume is filled, closed, and the next one begins.

The Page Hierarchy

  • Year: Written once, prominently, at the start of the year.
  • Month: Written in numeric format (YYYY-MM) when it changes.
  • Day: Written at the start of the line each time you write.
  • Time Mark: Written in the margin to distinguish moments.

Seals as Visual Anchors

On paper, the five seals (~, ?, !, &, ^) serve as visual anchors. When you leaf through the pages, the eye catches these isolated characters quickly. They allow for fast browsing in a medium that lacks a digital search function.

What is Gained

By going analog, you gain disconnection. There are no notifications and no temptation to reformat. The mistake, the crossing out, and the change of mind are all preserved, staying faithful to the principle of writing without surveillance.
